If you have never tasted a fondue casserole before then you are in for a treat. This Irish Fondue Casserole is to die for. I have to force myself to not have second’s and thirds, it tastes that good. Now although it may taste a bit like the traditional fondue the Irish Fondue Casserole is really more of a comforting casserole. Who doesn’t love comfort foods these days.

What I like most about the Irish Fondue Casserole is that the bread is layered with cheese and then topped with a mixture of milk eggs and seasonings. You then take the dish and refrigerate it overnight. The next day the Fondue is then baked so that it’s wonderfully creamy on the inside and it’s crisp and golden brown on the outside. Right before you are about to serve the fondue it’s best to cut it into wedges.

Now before we get started cooking the Irish Fondue Casserole here is a list of the ingredients you will be needing:

12 whole slices of firm white bread
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted softened butter
1/2 pound (2 cups) of shredded Swiss cheese
1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce
Salt and pepper added to taste
4 eggs
3/4 teaspoon of dry mustard
1 clove of finely chopped garlic
1-1/2 cups of half and half
2/3 cup of milk
1/2 a cup of chicken broth
2 teaspoons full of fresh chopped chives

Cooking Instructions:

1/ First you will need to cut the crusts off of the slices of bread.

2/ In a small bowl you will stir together the butter, garlic and mustard. You will also need to spread each of the slices of bread with some of the butter.

3/ Next you will arrange 6 of the slices of bread, with the butter side down, in a 9 by 13-inch baking dish.

4/ Now in a medium sized bowl you will combine the shredded cheese, Worcestershire sauce, chopped chives, salt and pepper. Next evenly sprinkle the cheese all over the bread that is in the baking dish. Then you will top with the remaining slices of bread, butter side up this time.

5/ In another medium bowl you will need to beat the eggs, milk, chicken broth and half and half. Then pour the mixture over the bread. Finally cover tightly and refrigerate the Irish Fondue Casserole overnight.

6/ The next day when you are ready to cook it you will need to Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Then uncover the fondue and place it in the oven to bake for 1 hour. Or until the top of it is lightly browned and the inside is fairly firm.

7/ All you then need to do is to remove the fondue from the oven. Just let it cool for 10 minutes, then you can cut into 8 or 10 wedges.

What I love most about this recipe for Irish Fondue Casserole is that it only takes about 15 minutes of prep time, a total of 60 minutes to cooks and serves 8-10. How great is that? It really tastes wonderful and is great to make and serve anytime of the year.
